Natural Cooking Solutions With Potatoes

Potatoes:

  • Before scraping new potatoes, soak them for half an hour in cold water which has been salted. Not only do the skins peel off easily, but the hands are not stained
  • To make peeled potatoes last three or more days in the refrigerator put a few drops of vinegar into the water
  • When slicing potatoes, hold the paring knife over a gas flame or in boiling water and the potatoes will slice easily
  • To improve the flavor of old potatoes, add a little sugar to the water in which they are boiled
  • Adding a teaspoon of vinegar to boiling water for potatoes so they won't turn black
  • If you boil the potatoes with the skins on they will retain a lot the natural food value of the potato and peel easily
  • For delicious golden fried potatoes, sprinkle them lightly with flour before frying them
  • For a fluffy baked potatoe they should be washed and pricked a few times with a knife then baked for about 50 minutes at 450-500 degrees.
  • To bake potatoes quickly, boil them in salted water for ten minutes, then put them into oven. The boiling water will heat them through more rapidly than if they were placed cold into the oven
  • Let potatoes stand in boiling water for 15 minutes before putting them in oven for baking, this will keep them moist and bake in half the time
  • Use a muffin pan to make baked potatoes
  • Yesterday's baked potatoe can be rebaked by dipping them in warm water and baking at 250 F until heated through
  • Left over baked potatoes can also be used for potato salad or for home fries for breakfast
  • Grate a raw potato and add it to your soup when you put too much salt in it. The potato absorbs the salt
  • When making mashed potatoes that have become over salted, add lemon juice to take away saltyness
  • For mashed potatoes, boil with the jackets on, then run thru a ricer, mix in your buter or margarine or fat product well then add your milk or dairy product for the fluffiest mashed potatoes
  • By adding 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, milk and butter to potatoes will make them fluffy when mashed
  • Potatoes won't sprout if you place a few apples in with them
  • When ferns turn yellow, slice a raw potato and put it on top of the soil. This will draw out the worms which are usually responsible for such a condition
